Where it came from

While the South Side was making tracks designed to wreck a room, Larry Heard was doing something else with the same equipment. A trained drummer who came to house from jazz fusion, he wrote chord progressions that would have been at home on a Herbie Hancock record and put them over a drum machine.

The results - Mystery of Love, Can You Feel It - are built almost entirely on a Roland Juno-106. The chorus circuit on that synth, a simple bucket-brigade delay, is doing more work than any other single component. It is why those chords sound like they occupy physical space.

This is where house stopped being purely functional dance music and became something people listened to at home.

How it works musically

Slower and much sparser. The drums recede deliberately - fewer hits, softer velocities, more room. The chords lead the record.

Harmony gets extended: minor ninths, major sevenths, voicings borrowed from jazz rather than pop. Notes are held nearly the full bar so a long release actually rings into the next chord.

The bass sustains rather than plucks. Where the Chicago patch has zero sustain and a fast decay, this one holds at around 70% - it is a bed, not a percussion part. Resonance stays near zero: on the original hardware, turning it up scooped the low end out, which is why the deepest records have the least resonant filters.

The patches

Deep BassTyrell N6

Round sustained sub. Cutoff 23%, resonance 10 - low resonance protects the fundamental. Long decay, 70% sustain. This holds, it does not pluck.

Deep ChordsTyrell N6

The warmest patch in the library. 250ms attack, sustain maxed, long release, chorus II at 60%. Play four-note voicings and let them ring across the bar.

Deep StabTyrell N6

Darker chord stab for the drier sections. Lower cutoff, less chorus than the pad. Play it short where a held chord would be too much.

Rhodes PadTyrell N6

Electric-piano-flavoured pad. Slow attack, long release, heavy chorus. The warmest thing in the library after the Deep Chords.

Warm PluckTyrell N6

Soft melodic pluck for counter-lines over the chords. Medium decay, chorus for width. Sits above the bass without fighting it.

Deep SubVital

Round sine-led sub for the deepest sections. Almost no distortion, long hold.

PD Deep BassRegency

Deep sustained phase-distortion bass. Gentle sweep, high amp sustain so it holds. The roundest of the Regency set.
